Exploring the challenges and solutions of succession planning
In more than a decade of research and surveys on nonprofit leadership, The Bridgespan Group observed that the number 1 organizational concern expressed by boards and CEOs was succession planning. Despite the plentiful research and discussions about the need for organizations to develop their human capital, many nonprofit CEOs and their boards continue to miss the answer to succession planning sitting right under their noses—the homegrown leader.
Their new study surfaced what they call a "leadership development deficit" and explores the root causes and costs of frequent leadership turnover. This overview in the Stanford Social Innovation Review reviews the research findings and shares how to reverse the trend and connect talent development to organizational goals effectively.
