During the latest American Express Leadership Academy, two special livestream events featured powerful talks from inspiring leaders. Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of Acumen, spoke about "embracing the difficult" in the 21st century, and Ana L. Oliveira, President & CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation, shared her insights on diversity and inclusion in the nonprofit sector.
You can find recordings of both livestreams in our Resources section, or watch the embedded videos below.
Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO, Acumen on Embracing the Difficult: Leadership for a New/Next Generation
Novogratz shares the personal story of her journey as a leader and the experiences that led her, together with colleagues, to start Acumen, a nonprofit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to tackle poverty. She makes the case that larger institutions must renew themselves—not once, but regularly—or become irrelevant, and shares the ways that she and her team continually “disrupt themselves.” She also details how her experiences in Africa led her to confront what it means to be human and “monsters and angels that live in each of us,” and our responsibility as leaders to shape the world we live in. Finally, check out her practical advice for balancing vision and day-to-day realities.
Ana L. Oliveira, President & CEO, The New York Women’s Foundation: Diversity and Inclusion in the Nonprofit Sector
At the same event, Ana L. Oliveira, President & CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation, spoke on the topic of diversity and inclusion, and what it means to be a leader in the 21st century.
Oliveira makes the case that the nonprofit sector, more than any other sector is positioned to transform communities by “dismantling the demeaning ways we structure ourselves as human beings,” often driven by racism, classism, sexism, able-ism and ageism.
Our value as leaders is rooted in our unique perspectives, she argues, “yet we hardly look at ourselves as an asset.” She also shares provocative insights on how approaches to philanthropy may inadvertently further exclusion.
